And now, Our Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed The Choice from beginning to end and never wanted to put it down.

A realistic, fascinating story of a young woman in 1975 who chooses the loving option of adoption. A mysterious older woman has a recommendation for 17-year-old Sandy which she acts upon. The reader will eventually learn who that older woman is and why she gave Sandy the advice she did.

The young Sandy chooses life for her own twins, and ultimately reconnects with them as young men. She is forced to navigate the trecherous waters of the justice system, and does so willingly to ensure the safety of another young woman and her unborn child. Through Sandy's selfless love, she again saves a son's life, rescues a woman and her children, and ensures the safety of an unborn girl.

The short synopsis above doesn't begin to delve into the depth of characters in this novel. It is excellent and well worth reading. In spite of disappointments, danger and injury, all ends well. Enjoy!

A sincere thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers and Litfuse for providing us with a free copy in exchange for an honest review. We loved this book. -- Gail Lewis

HOSTILE WITNESS by Rebecca Forster

This intriguing novel was offered free from Amazon.com for Kindle. It sounded interesting and was free, so I downloaded it. It will definitely lead me to purchase others by this author.

Hostile Witness is the first in a series of novels by Ms. Forster and is excellent. The author's other books in her Witness series feature several of the same characters.

Josie Baylor-Bates is an attorney who gave up defending those accused of murder when a woman she successfully defended later kills again. She was guilty after all. Josie leaves her highly successful practice to join a small law firm defending lower-income people. When a former college roommate arrives at her home in hysterics, Josie agrees to visit the woman's teenage daughter, Hannah, in jail. She was arrested for the murder of her step-grandfather. Josie feels compelled to help the teen and agrees to defend her.

Did the teenager murder him because he was abusive, or was it someone else? Josie, with the help of her sweetheart, Archer, discovers the truth. Her lovable dog, Max, is a hero too.

The murder investigations and courtroom manipulations portrayed in this novel are fascinating. Ms. Forster does a wonderful job of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Hostile Witness and didn't want to put it down. I am under no obligation to do a review, I simply want to.

BARONESS by Susan May Warren

Baroness is Book Two in the Daughters of Fortune series and it made me want to go back and read Book One, then anticipate Book Three.

This is a Christian novel that isn’t preachy or tepid. Ms. Warren knows how to write well and delivers a fascinating tale. It’s the story of two cousins in the 1920’s whose personalities differ greatly. Although both are born to wealth, each wants the freedom to live different lives. One seeks fame as an actress, the other a ranch in Montana. Their parallel stories are believable, dramatic and exciting, whether threatened by mobsters or wing walking on a biplane.

Neither Rosie, nor Lilly, intends to fall in love or get married. The mistakes they make, risks they take, and dangers they face, kept me turning pages. I was always eager to find out what mishaps they’d encounter next.  From the very beginning they are at odds with one another, and as their lives diverge and come back together, you will be surprised by the outcome.

The author isn’t afraid to deliver heart-stopping drama and tragedy. The action and surprises just keep coming. I didn’t want to put the book down from the beginning to the unexpected, surprising end.

OUR REVIEW:
The title of this book caught my eye because I raise small exotic birds. Anything that says "birdsong" has to be intriguing, right? Then there was the fact that this fictional novel is based on a historic family, and in Ohio, no less. We have family in and from Ohio and have a fascination for the Underground Railroad. That made it a must read!

Although a little slow in the beginning, hang in there. It gets better. Rosslyn Elliott weaves a believable story of gentile romance and intrigue. Her characters' faith brings them together and gives them the courage to stand against slavery. She has done an admirable job of researching and presenting many historic facts intertwined within the fiction. Among her characters, she even introduces John Parker, a former slave who actually employed white men in his iron foundry. She makes me want to know more. A well-written novel.

Thank you to Litfuse and Thomas Nelson Publishers for providing us with a complimentary review copy of the book.

FIRST SNOW by Christine Cunningham

I feel old. When a character mentions digital music in Christine Cunningham’s First Snow I think of CDs, but “Who uses CDs anymore?” Still, feeling old doesn’t stop me enjoying this tale, nor does the way my stomach lurches in dismay at the thought of a “cup of hot chocolate and a plate of fries.”

First Snow is a delightful Christmas tale of a young woman who also feels old (and listens to CDs). Nell’s dreams of spouse and family seem to recede with the passing years, but it’s not clear if she’s driving suitors away or simply waiting for the right man. When he appears, will she ever let him close?

Nell works in a bakery where she meets the handsome Hasan, but it’s her interest in writing that throws her more closely into his company, and the author builds a pleasingly gentle romance between the two. Clearly made for each other, they tread carefully and warily on the slippery snows of relationships while Christmas weaves its spell. Meanwhile sister Sydney plays matchmaker in all the wrong places, but true love will surely win through.

One final obstacle threatens all Nelly’s dreams, but there’s a surprise in store that turns frost to Christmas beauty. The artificial dance of romance has some intriguingly pleasing twists, making this a good short tale for Christmas or any cold dark day.

THIS GOLDEN LAND by Barbara Wood

In This Golden Land, Barbara Wood takes a love story and fills it with vivid history and fascinating facts, making every page as informative as it is exciting. Not since The Thornbirds have I enjoyed any novel about Australia as much as this one.

The land and the people come alive in this wonderful story about Hannah and the many things she loves. There is her love for her physician father, for his research, for her goal to improve medicine, for her many women friends, and especially for two handsome men who enter her life at differing times. Who will she end up with? You won’t be disappointed in the outcome.

I found Barbara Wood’s portrayal of the Australian aborigines and their way of life to be particularly gratifying, educational and fascinating. Her attention to detail made the Outback real for me. I could almost feel the heat and see the shimmering mirages as Neal struggles to survive.

This is also a story about 1800’s European class distinctions and about the taming of Australia. It is the tale of strong men and women who prevail over adversity to achieve success and happiness in an astounding country.

Barbara Wood is one of my favorite authors, and This Golden Land is an exceptional book. You will love her characters. This novel has my highest recommendation; I didn’t want it to end.

By the way, we’d love to see a sequel that re-introduces Jallara with her child, and also Jamie O’Brien. They’re wonderful characters we’d enjoy meeting again. Thanks for the great read!

Special thanks to Sharon Stewart and Barbara Wood for providing a review copy of this wonderful novel.

VIRGINS OF PARADISE by Barbara Wood

In the late 1990’s I picked up a pocket paperback at a garage sale. Published in 1994, the book became one of the most memorable books I’ve ever read. It follows the life of Lady Alice, a British woman living in the 1940’s who married an Egyptian Muslim, Dr. Ibrahim Rasheed, and moved into his family’s home. She, and the daughter she later had, were greatly impacted by a culture foreign to the west. The practices of her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law and nieces sometimes shocked her as she struggled to protect her daughter from becoming like them.

After reading The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, my memory of Virgins of Paradise Street returned full force and I wanted to read it again. Thinking an old copy might turn up on Half.com, I went looking for it. It turns out Barbara Wood republished the book as Virgins of Paradise in 2007. It was that copy which I acquired and re-read. She re-edited the book, adding, enhancing, and fleshing out the original version.

Virgins of Paradise delves into the personalities and conflicts of several women, as well as the male Muslim doctor. You’ll find yourself empathizing with each of the women who, though very different, suffer under the same oppressive system. There’s also a mystery surrounding Amira, the doctor’s mother, that will keep you wondering as you read.

Don’t let the title put you off. Virgins of Paradise is a fascinating and enlightening read. If you enjoyed The Kite Runner, you will certainly like this book. I think it is even better than either of Khaled Hosseini’s novels…possibly because it’s written from a woman’s perspective, but also because Woods successfully weaves several fascinating stories into one. I highly recommend Virgins of Paradise by Barbara Wood.
