Sacred Fire is a book designed to be read in and unhurried
manner. I often found myself pausing to revisit a page or two and then meditate
upon the message contained within them.
Fr. Rolheiser begins by outlining the classic structure of Christian
life. Having covered the fundamentals, he the builds on this sturdy foundation encouraging
the reader to go further, dig deeper into themselves and God. He takes the
reader through a spiritual life-cycle, if you will, tracing the ebb and flow of
a typical life from young adulthood to parent to middle age.
I found the final section, the one that deals with total
giving of yourself even unto death, to be the most interesting part of the book.
Fr. Rolheiser articulates an ideal and process of what might be called the Good
Death in ways I’ve never encountered before.
This is definitely a book to be read over and over again, gleaning
all the wisdom within its pages.
